KUMPULAN SAJAK

Suar Suroso:

REMEMBERING
OLD DEAR COMRADES

For comrades:
Qian Liren, Zhu Liang, He Xiquan,
Zhu Shanqing, , ……….
Kim, Fukuda, Sardar Mitra, Sasmita etc.

Quietly flows the Danube over Europe unceasingly,
slicing in two parts the Hungarian capital city,
Budapest divided by the great river;
gazing far away from the top of Gellert Hill *),
how magnificent is the beauty of citiy’s panorama,
a bridge of steel overflowing the giant river,
from West to the East linking the two riversides,
binding Buda and Pest to become Budapest,
like a green jewel, the beautiful Margaret Island **),
decorating the long bridge flowing over the Danube;
in a white two-storeys building at Benczur Utca,
the headquarter of the World Federation of Democratic Youth,
unceasing the telephone ringing and typewriters ticking,
where enthusiastically working
the youth representatives from five continents.

After the defeat of fascism and the victory of the World War,
500 representatives of young generation from five continents,
gathered and pledged in London:

“We pledge that we shall remember this unity,
forged in this month, October 1945
not only today, not only this week, this year, but always
until we have built the world we dreamed and fought for
We pledge ourselves to build the unity of the young throughout the world
all races, all colours, all nationalities, all beliefs
to eliminate all traces of fascism from the earth
to build a deep and sincere international friendship
among the peoples of the world,
to keep a just and lasting peace
to eliminate want, frustration and enforced idleness,
we have come to confirm the unity of all youth;
salute our comrades who have died
and pledge our word that skillful hands, keen brains and young enthusiasm
shall never more be wasted in war
we shall build a world that is beautiful and free,
Forward fo our Future !” ****).

“Youth Unite ! Forward for lasting peace,
democracy, national independence of the peoples
and for our better future !”

With this pledge and slogan
the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) has been established.

So beautiful as the rithme of Strauss’s Waltzes,
from Budapest the WFDY sings aloud the voice of the youth:
“One great vision unites us,
though remotes are the lands of our birth” *****)
this marvelous and great ideals
are the ground of activities of this world youth organisation.

Splendid and joyfull
as the rithme of Czardas dance in Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody,
in our memory:
sweeter than the yellowish honey,
more fragrance than the smell of jasmine and red roses,
more impressive than a dream in a silent night,
the youngster of the world moving forward
like the waves of stampede in the large ocean,
so history has noted:
the South-East Asian Youth Meeting in Calcutta,
Afro-Asian Students Conference in Bandung,
Afro-Asian Youth Conference in Cairo,
World Youth Forum in Moscow,
all kind of WFDY congresses, seminars, meetings
ini Budapest, Prague, Wienna, Kiev, Colombo,
Stockholm, Santiago de Chile, Conakry, Jakarta, Sofia;
international youth delegations for friendly visit to
Indonesia, China, USSR, Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia,Marocco, Senegal,
Mali, Guinea, Ghana, Cuba etc.;
and how tremendous and gigantic events of festivity,
when ten of thousands of youngsters,
from more than one hundred countries of five continents,
meeting new friends abroad far from lands of own birth,
dancing and singing, competing in sports,
vividly exchanging ideas, lovely embracing each other,
in World Youth and Students Festivals
in Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Warsaw, Bucharest, Moscow,
Vienna, Stockholm, ….Pyongyang,
under the banner of Peace dan Friendship
sponsored by the WFDY.

When the Cold War’s rampage menacing the world,
working at the headquarter of WFDY in Budapest,
we remember:
fierce debating in meetings of secretariat,
seeking truth through arguing on differences of opinions,
for the cause of defending the rights of young generation,
defending world peace,
supporting the struggles of the peoples
for national independence.

These great ideals of the WFDY:,
“one great vision unite us”
and the pledge adopted on the year of 1945,
is still vivid in our memory,
is unforgettable
when we enter the twenty first century.
